ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I became interested in art growing up in Chicago and visiting its museums and galleries. As a child I was privileged to take lessons at the Art Institute of Chicago and remember the strong smell of paint and thinners in the working area of the building. My paternal grandmother was an excellent painter of watercolors. My early claim in that area was a water color painting on display in a grade school contest at the Fair department store in Chicago. At the Art Institute I recall being sent outside on my own on Michigan Avenue to draw and paint one of the lions guarding the entrance. The painting is long gone but a few years ago I was in Chicago and had a cab stop in front of the Art Institute and I took some pictures and who knows.
In high school at Phillips Andover I learned how to paint in acrylics. I sketched in college but really started painting on a trip to Europe between college and law school. I saw many countries and museums and galleries. I painted in oils as I traveled. I painted during Stanford law school and owned the Elden Art Gallery in Menlo Park California. I painted after law school and then when overseas with the Navy for three years during the Vietnam war. I was stationed in the Philippines and Vietnam. I also painted when visiting Japan. In the fall of 2017 I revisited Paris and London and got renewed inspiration.
I retired from the law in 2011 and renewed painting. I have sold my work and do commissions and donate art to worthy auctions. Two of my favorite artists are Piet Mondrian and Vincent Van Gogh. For an American artist I like Andrew Wyeth. I love color and am encouraged to do more abstract paintings. I enjoy painting buildings, still lifes, landscapes, and sometimes people.
In spring 2015 I started painting mostly in oils and in 2016 I tried a few watercolors. I have exhibited in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. In 2019 I started painting more in water mixable oils.
